Some Wild Wellington Weather hit the Capital over the last day and a half and most of what happened you'll see on TV or on the internet........... for snap shot go to www.stuff.co.nz to view a whole bunch of images.......it's the old story a picture tells a thousand words.
The weather was well predicted and watching the weather I had to get out on the water before it hit and did so at around midday Thursday on the surf ski........it was quite cool as you'd expect, with splashes of drizzle and sunshine for good measure.
By the time I made it to work for my night shift the day had changed quite considerably, we managed to eat half of our dinner then by 6.30pm were back and forward like a ping pong ball from one call to another till around 4 am in the morning when we were able to take a 90 minute break to re charge the batteries.
It was fair to say that the Capital took a damned good hammering with the usual things occurring....... trees being uprooted and landing over cars, houses and streets........roofs lifting, windows and even commercial roller doors being blowing both in and out....... Power Poles and Power lines down all over the place.
The New Zealand Fire Service was again out doing some of it's core Business.........also here's one for your office quiz......... in New Zealand the Fire Service are 100% funded by Insurance Comany Levies........ not Government Funded as some may believe. Anyhow we were just doing our job......... but one thing I always notice from some of these incidents is how much work the Lines and Power Tranmission Staff have to do in these situations............long after the wind dies down they will still be working their guts out restoring peoples Electricity supplies.........also many don't appreciate that the Lines Staff they are working in the most extreme circumstances. So if your power does go out and it takes a day or two to restore your Electricity........in the interim just revert to your home Civil Defence Emergency Kit or alternative supplies..............if you haven't got any measures in place....... maybe you should start looking to do this now!
Winter should resume normal tranmission tomorrow..........the strong southerlies are dropping off tomorrow (Saturday) and by Sunday we should have a Northerly and a glimmer of sunshine again..........which will mean I'll be out o the surf ski tomorrow afternoon and Sharlene and I will get out on the Stand Up Paddle Boards on Sunday.
Last but not least the shortest day is today so the daylight hours will improve each day now.......it's also offiially the first day of winter so I'll make sure I go for a mid winter swim this weekend as well........buff chested and boardshorts of course!
