I managed to get out on the water 4 hours before the big storm hit Wellington on Thursday last week. I took this photo of the Carter Fountain on Oriental Parade...... which a lot closer to the waterline than it usually is due to the very high tide. It's no wonder that there were so many seawall breaches debris strewn all over the roads, footpaths and paths lifting during this period.............the writing was on the wall so to speak.
Speaking of writing on the wall this cool looking grafitti was spotted on the Evans Bay sea wall close to Point Jerningham, which made me think.... if some of the local authorities or businesses were more dynamic or engaging with each other maybe we'd see a water safety message there instead, or a Hutchwilco PFD advertisement..............or better still "Welcome to Think Kayaks Country"
I actually managed to get out on the water three days in a row this week and while taking one of the usual promotional swings past the Wellington Waterfront I snapped a photo of Fergs Kayaks. They've been open for the past week...... after a 6 week shutdown for earthquake and wharf strengthening. It's good to see them open again and no one's more pleased than I am as I picked up a replacement Think leg leash and I ordered some Vaikobi Paddling gear http://www.vaikobi.com/ .........I've ordered the V cold pants and also V cold short sleeve top with warm up sleeves.
The last photo was taken after a paddle from the beautiful Shelly Bay..............late afternoon sun, nice warm grass under your feet post paddle.......simply magic.
I paddled one of my favourite circuits, around the Miramar Peninsula to the Seatoun Wharf back around across the top of Evans Bay across Oriental Parade to Freyberg Beach then back to Shelly again...........90 minutes of pure joy on the water on a fantastic fine, clear winter day..............back to reality working the next two days!
