Life is no dress rehearsal

Quote from a mate in Hawkes Bay (Dave Todd) in the 90's........probably came by someone else?

You can probably recall from previous generations experiences when they were sick or injured "back in the day".....I'll be all right....or just harden up. As history shows these people didn't really listen to their bodies and look after themselves as well as they could have......and the price you pay for this..... comes later down the track.

There are no excuses, you have to look after yourself, and also if you can't convey what's going on with your body to a Doctor or Specialist it will be difficult for them to get you back to 100% again......because that is where you can be, if you follow a few simple rules.

There are no short cuts to rehabilitation and while ACC use the party line, get moving and get back to work quickly.... it's better for you....in fact in a number of cases this is quite the opposite. I find the first week after an injury is critical, if you have to seek immediate treatment...... Personally I find that if I do the rehab/stretching exercises every two hours for 10 to 30 minutes (depending on the degree of said injury) I tend to be in a hell of a better state than I would be, getting too busy and too distracted by returning to physical or even desk work or chasing your kids around like a blue arse fly.

You have to get your body back into alignment because your posture or injury will accentuate further down the track and this actually costs yourself, your Employer and ACC bigger bucks and also the grief associated with it.

On March 23, I had a motorcycle accident on Oriental Parade travelling home from work, a ute backed out from an angle park into my lane, and I smacked straight into the back of it. In my contract at work this is covered as a work accident (travel to and from work) and fortunately we have a very dynamic team of Ladies who manage the New Zealand Fire Service ACC accredited scheme.....they always go that extra mile for us.

Anyhow I went from 40 kmh to 0 into the back of a steel bumper of a ute........yes it did hurt, the bruises were a good indicator. Factors like waking up every morning at ridiculous hour like 3am or 4 am in the morning (for the last month) because your body is telling you something, yet again, is another good indicator...that something just ain't quite right.

In hindsight this is what I should have done. Immediately gone to my Chiropractor Lorraine Phillips and also to Trevor Hamilton at Capital Sport Medicine to get my body straightened back out again. This is now rule 101.....never too old to learn huh!

In the following 6 weeks after my accident I've slowly become more bound up with niggly injuries most of this because my back and neck were out of sync. The Professionals above have records of their previous visits to refer to, so we have solid baselines to work to.

Ten days ago my body started to deteriorate through extraordinary strains I get while carrying out Emergency work at my work place. I tried hard all week to rehab at home with the usual self medicating stretches that always knock me into shape quite quickly, but the damage was already a work in progress and I was heading on an uphill battle.
I finally went to Lorraine Phillips 3 days ago and I now have to spend the next 5 days getting back to basics with 8 sessions of stretches daily to pull my body back to good health again.

Today it's off to the Doctor, off to my massage Specialist, back to Lorraine on Wednesday and by Friday I'll be back to 80 % again.
I'm at 60% at the moment, I'm not feeling that great to tell you the truth......60% might have passed "School C" or University Entrance back in the day............but if you don't treat your body as it should be treated........sure as eggs and bacon it will come back and bite you fair and squarely on the arse weeks or months down the track......and even when you get to 60, 70 or even 80 years old......and hello ACC it'll still be costing you well down the track!

So do yourself a favour, stop, think and act, the damage you do now is the discomfort you will feel in the future....as Paul Lyall from the Wellington Fire Brigade used to say..... "Rest assured my Son"

There ends the lesson for today :-)..... For more visit Chet Burt on Facebook.....or Think Kayak New Zealand on Facebook.....feel free to "Like" any of these pages....only if you think they are actually any good!
