While there are a number of paddlers who talk up downwind paddling, I think that's fine, but for a full body workout you can't beat a mixed bag of conditions that include upwind, downwind and some reflective wash off the seawalls in your local training patch all in the same session.
I am probably over biased ignoring the downwind thing....... mainly because I'm too tight to run the van and another vehicle around it's so time consuming it cuts out valuable and enjoyable water time.
Today I was out mixing it up in the 40 to 50 kmh Northerly running some down wind loops :-) off Greta Point and taking the chicken run out of the wind on the upwind legs close to the shoreline on Evans Bay Parade. The next leg was checking out the sea walls heading around to Oriental Parade where the swells were pitching into
the back of the ski pushing me through the upwind swells from Snapper Point to Balaena Bay. Oriental Parade provided plenty of backwash off the seawalls as usual and a bit of excitement when a fisherman cast his fishing line just in front of me while I was bobbling through "the washing machine"..........never a dull moment there. Forgot to mention had a quick session on the SUP yesterday heading around to Freyberg Beach and back from Hataitai Beach just over 7 kms and 1 hour of paddling......getting in at least one paddle ready for the CP SUP event this weekend click here to see what they're up to https://www.facebook.com/capitalpaddlers
Photos: surfing off Greta Point, In Wellington you need to park your ski against a tree so it doesn't blow away, Ski back on the rack, paddling gear on the line ready to go for tomorrow.
