The regular Wellington Tuesday Kayak series provided some extra entertainment last night................though I have some sympathy with the buoy set out people (I've had this occur myself).............a couple of the buoys drifted off the initial locations due to the keen southerly breeze.
The one thing about starting near the back is you tend to pick the lines and different angles people paddle to get around the course, sometimes it inspires you to look around. Last night for some reason this occurred and I spotted the first arrant buoy that had drifted just over 50 metres from it's original location, so as you do I played the buoy, and choose not the follow like sheep approach.
By the second lap the far buoy on the course was also drifting down Evans Bay a bit in the breeze as well, it's the old story if one goes another may follow.
At the end of the day a buoy is what you follow and it's like some yachting regattas the buoy does get shifted when the wind angles on the course change.
The course ran from Hataitai Beach, around he boat by the Coastguard to a buoy that was 20 metres off Cobham Drive by Placemakers along Cobham drive to another buoy by the rocks and concrete sea wall (as you turn to go to Miramar) then back to Hataitai Beach..............it was a 2 lap course.
