SUP's are here in Wellington and they're are already proving to be more popular to hire and also to buy than many other craft.
Many people just don't get Stand Up Paddling and those that are stuck in their own fitness activity that comes with it's own personal buzz will always feel that way.............they have finally found a sport that is as good as finding a long lost friend.
I love paddling surf ski but I have a lot of respect for SUP as they are fantastic for balance and also cross training..............and you will see a hell of a lot more through the water (being up high) than you'll ever see sitting down on any other craft. Also they are easy to handle store and manouvre around and you can be on the water a lot quicker than most other craft...........with the exception of a surf board.
Speaking of Surfboards there is currently a discrepency in the Regional legislation that may need to be lobbied and addressed and an amendment/s made.
A SUP is a giant surf board..............apparently you have to have a PFD if paddling in a harbour, river or estuary but not in Lyall Bay????
The legislation was more than likely introduced before SUP made it on the scene in NZ and there were hardly any groups or clubs let alone a National Body, around to make a submission.
So like anything if people are passionate and have the practicalities of sport versus sport likeness sorted near misses drownings I'm sure some changes can be made..............and what we'd find out is that motorboat drivers are where the majority mistakes are being made and they should have liciences and that Water Police should be out issuing them tickets?.............too hard basket :-) .......aim for an easy target.
Anyhow great being out on the water today on the Starboard K15 in Evans Bay in a 20 kmh Southerly.............the K 15 a flatwater SUP......... really?............. with it's pointy nose it jumps through the swells nicely.
Have some snaps of Sharlene collecting one of the buoys near Steeple Rock, Seatoun after yesterdays event and the Starboard K 15 Click on any photo to enlarge.
