Course testing for Sunday

If you're going to run a Paddling event you have to paddle out on the water in similar conditions that you're going to have on the day of the event and at the exact venue.

If you're going to wing it on past experience you're just not going to get a good feel of what all paddlers will have to experience on the day. While we are running these events for SUP, surf ski and waka ama singles we really have to work for the craft that have the toughest job balancing or surfing through each of the courses.
If there is an upwind section stand up paddle boards have to be able to get the "run of the green" so to speak.................which means they must be able to carve through swells or through the wind at the best possible angles.

I tried two courses today................... the first one I paddled from Tarakena Bay to Scorching Bay.............the forecast looked better than it actually was................1.5 metre swells on the way to Tarakena Bay and the downwind section a few big 3 metre swells in the middle of Breaker Bay which offered nothing to surf really.............so that combined with too many rocks to avoid and large patches of weed that most are unfamiliar with on this coastline lead to an easy decision to can this option.

This leaves us with a pretty good option with a good course tucked inside the Seatoun Bays.............an icecream shop and fish and chips handy.....................sounds like a good day at the beach to me.

Final decision on the course will be made by 10 am tomorrow (Saturday)...........see you back here then.
