Matiu Island Event update

Weather forecast...likely 30 kmh - 40 kmh South Easterly......we will up date this every two days.... with a final course announcement being made 24 hours before the event.

Start: Giant Oars on The Esplanade, Petone at 9 am

Registration: from 8 am

Long course: 8.3 km for sit down paddlers (around "the big island")

Shorter course: 6.5 km for Stand Up paddlers to Matiu Island wharf and back

Event open to:

waka ama, sea kayaks, adventure racing doubles, stand up's and multsiport kayaks (only if paddlers have a craft that matches their skill level in the conditions that arise on the day)

Event Fee:

$10 singles
$15 doubles
$30 sixes

All craft must have the appropriate safety equipment for their craft, PFD's are compulsory and must be worn

All paddlers must be capable of self rescue....practice this well before any event not during.

There will not be any motorised safety craft on the water.....we encourage personal responsibility for everyone's actions, choice of craft, training in open water and maintenance of gear.

If the conditions are too horrendous we may well elect to go with alternate course.

Everyone who enters must read this page...this is the level of compliance that we adhere to continue on with these types of events.
