No surprises that in Wellington the wind can go from.....bulk warp speed in one direction.....to a reasonably moderate pace in no time at all.
The wind finally dropped in Wellington at around 6 am this morning and the Southerly kicked through while we were setting up our event staging area......the southerly was a little early but that's o.k we squeezed out "an o.k." a course with what we had at the time.
Thank you to everyone who had the confidence in our beautiful Cities weather to get on the water and especially thanks to Clark Townsley who after some gentle encouragement switched over from the short course to the long course.....awesome work Clark and also Sharon who are new to their surf skis and coped well with a few tricky patches,
Course was 7 km an L shaped course from Hataitai Beach and around the Carter Fountain on Oriental Parade and back....conditions fine with a 30 kmh Southerly, a healthy mix or a short amount of side swell with more and equal lashing of downwind and upwind paddling
The start was pretty messy but everyone was patient and apply some good of some common and backed off and let everyone through the tricky waters and a small swell at the start......hat's off to all.
Sharlene was her regular dynamo self setting up today and ably assisted by Leonie Howell, Garfield Toro from Wanganui, extra Media and Post event Team of Lei Faletolu and Paula Napier and last but not least vid Specialist Dave Mc Knight.
Congrats also to Peter Melling for winning the SWAZI thermal top......we'll have your re sized top to you asap.
Sorry to have regulars out with Colds and other commitments, but still a great little turnout all things considered.
We have two more Cold Kiwis Series to go.........and two more venues to choose from......Days Bay is one and..... either Shelly Bay or Seatoun for the last. It all depends on where the best shelter is for our sometimes over vigorous wind.
Next Saturday we're sliding up to Wanganui for their CRNZ 10 km event on Lake Wiritoa.....we'll post details here during the week or you can go to the Wanganui Kayak Club page on Facebook
