We arrived back from Picton late last night after the big Portage expedition with "Kayak Les" Morris.
Although we had two Portages during the vent that totalled 5 kms....we actually had 4 extra Portages if you include walk on and walking off the Ferry and back and forth from our accomodation to the start.
There were a truck load of people at this years 25th Anniversary event a ballpark figure of around 80 to 90 paddlers...........fantastic compared to many years when you'd have between 15 and around 40 paddlers.
A Big Thanks to Mondo Kopua from Blenheim who rallied around the Waka Ama Clubs to get them to the start line. Raymond as he was known at Dannevirke High was a year behind me, did everything over the years from kayaking with the late Mike
Rowley (Ruahine Kayaks) to multsiport and now runs Cyclocross events in Blenheim and works between both the Marlborough and Tasman Bay set ups.
The Waka Ama Peps were awesome, their start was 3 km into the first leg of the traditonal event just off Mable Island as each bunch of paddlers came through..........their were shills shreiks and must clapping and cheering.........this was atmosphere personified.....and big ups to our Waka Ama brothers and sisters there.
We adopted Tim Grammer on the Ferry (who is the Alan Wicker of kayaking) he's lived and worked
in Tauranga, Chrictchurch, Wellington and Fiji and now resides in Auckland he's great company and always good for a laugh or three.....Roo as he is commonly known won this years event as he has done 3 times before and it takes a pretty exceptional effort to beat Nathan Faavae who portages as quickly as a bush pig scurrying through the bush........lightening fast he is!
I finally got to test run my flash wheels which were well photographed and the envy of those I passed on the Portages and I also took around 40 photos - the
best of you'll see below.......should have taken more but I just didn't have enough hands even using the wheels.
Les struggled with a bad back, Tim won in around 2 hrs 33 min.........(the course the last 3 years is around 3 to 5 minutes longer) and I did 2 hrs 54 mins which I'm happy with after a dicky shoulder and no running or portage training being carried out this year . The results should be on the
Marlborough Triathlon and Multisport Club website later today.
