Waitangi Day

A day off why wouldn't you get out on the water?

I sweet talked Sharlene into dropping me off at Seatoun Wharf today to take advantage of a South Easterly surf down the Seatoun Bays across the top of Evans Bay in the side on swells finishing at Freyberg Beach...........then a nice dip afterwards at the beach to cool off.

Tomorrow evening will be a pleasant change being able to paddle with about 30 other kayak/surf skis for the Kupe Summer Kayak Series it's going to be another 30 to 40 kph South Easterly, and with a bit of luck it'll be a Start and Finish from Greta Point heading around the Fountain and back.

I'm still a big fan of wearing a bouyancy vest...............no they don't get too hot if you dip them in cool water before you head off..............
I've also got a Mocke mesh buoyancy vest http://www.paddlekitnz.com/mocke-pfd.html which allows the cool breeze to blow through the mesh and individual foam bouyancy blocks.

I also use a leg leash on the ski as well, if for some reason you flake out through pushing too hard, get bowled by errant motor boats into or get hit by one of these freak waves or wind gusts that many enounter you have the bonus safety factor of staying with your craft............they also have a couple of quick release mechanisms as well.

Also came across this article which is quite handy as well in regard to setting your surf ski footstraps correctly http://www.thinkkayak.com.au/2011/05/foot-straps/

Hot tip for this month if anyone is about to renew their House Insurance...............instead of getting lumbered with a $300 per annum increase ask to have your House Cover excess increased from the standard $200 to say $750 or $1500...............we saved over $250 p.a. by taking one of these volutary excess increases.

That's all folks.
