Race 9 Matiu Island

Awesome turnout of craft out there today, the O.C 1 craft were really out there in force and it was great to see the Stand Up Paddle Boarders also, you will see more of them in future races as they are just starting to establish themselves in Wellington, check out the North Shore beach Series they have about 20 plus people racing up there each week.

I think todays course could best be described as "Capital Punishment" I know they use this term in some Martial Arts promotions............ but hey racing casually downwind out around the Island.............. followed by a good head wind and choppy side swell on the way home............you have to ask yourself.
Yes downwind races are on the cards for the 2009/2010 Season we just have to work through the logistics of transportation of craft and added timeframes and costs that have to be allowed for, to make this all work.

Some really good efforts put in by all paddlers out there today, you have to appreciate that there are a few craft that are more suited to Sprint events, than rough water and head winds, and I'll mention those in O.C 1's and Surf life saving spec skis, SUP's and some other craft.

Also to those who come out and give these races a good crack, and do this on a very small amount or no training at all.

Raukawa Comerford is a good example of one of these people who works tirelessly behind the scenes and promotes events and liases with the various watersports groups around the Region, as many of you do, and she got out there and "toughed it out" today with the rest of us.

To those who travel from Levin, Masterton and Paraparaumu when they can, to race thank you, we all appreciate seeing you at the races.

Best wishes to those heading up for the Takapuna Cup this weekend................I'll be heading down to do race 3 of the Tasman Bay Surf ski Series, to help prepare for Trans Taupo next month. Chester
