Organising a good race

Well this weekend is a good lesson in organising a watersports event. It's all about preparedness and having a good source of weather info, or in my case wind information.

I'm a big fan of the site windfinder.com.

The Matariki Race Organisers have done it well over the last 5 days leading into their Event "Hikoikoi Matariki 2012"

I'm a big believer in getting out on the waterway I'm using for our events in the days preceeding the events.
I was out on the Matariki course on the Thursday when the wind, swells and tides were as they would have been on Saturday Morning. The Hutt River was also showing a good down river flow and also tidal movement a good number of surfable swells there, add to this picture the big swells on the South Coast, logs, debris and weed floating around the course and there's more to this than you think when making a sound judgement on the course for 150 competitors and their varying skill levels.

The forecast on Friday morning showed that the Southerly was slow moving there was also a huge 8 metre swell on the South Coast "Welcome to our World"

In a nutshell good call Chris Fox from Hikoikoi, I'm sure a good majority of us paddlers will really appreciate the warmer and much quieter south easterly on Sunday it's going to be an awesome day.
