Race 5, November 29, 2009 at Onepoto

A slight change of venue and course on Sunday still threw out a few challenges for paddlers.Due to a very strong North Westerly wind steaming down through the channel at Ngatitoa domain we opted early to locate our start around to the Rowing, Kayaking and Waka Clubs bases at Onepoto.

The course went from the jetty and around past Te Onepoto Bay through the Yacht moorings by the shoreline then around "the tyre" back to the start finish making up a 2 lap course of 7.3km. Considering the conditions were quite blustery we were pleased with the turn out..............traditionally these types of races attract more competitors when the weather and conditions are warm with not too much wind around the same practice applies to the turnout with Wellingtons Tuesday night twilight kayak Series.

The next outing we have organised is a surf ski Demo Day, which is on December 8 and runs around Wellingtons weekly Tuesday twilight kayak Series www.betterthantv.co.nz which is run by Shane Ross you can find info on the demo day on www.surfskiandwakaama.blogspot.com

The next race of the Series is Sunday December 20 and the venue is Wellington Waterski Club by the Motorway at Petone. The course will be 7 km and will be an out and back (1 lap) along the Motorway. It's one of the most sheltered courses in Wellington especially in the worst of the Northery and North Westerly winds.

The schedule for the races in 2010 are in draft form currently and will be published by the second week of December. At this stage the format will have a race in the first week of January running through to late April the races will start off at 7 kms and slowly extend a few kms each race up to 15km to assist paddlers building up to the Wellington Matariki race late May early June. The schedule also works around the major races on both the NZ Surf ski Racing and NZ Waka Ama calendar.
