Race 4 - Petone - Sunday November 2

A great turnout (37 paddlers) today considering the howler of a day before and the start of the day being a little coolish and probably a little un inviting for some.
You know the weather is going off the day before.............. when you're a Fireman and you're out securing loose roofing iron on other peoples houses and then you get a call to secure the roof on your own Fire Station...................everyone has good work stories!
Today due to the Southerly we went for a better option and went along the Petone Foreshore and up the Hutt River and around the Seaview Bridge a total distance of 9 km. When the Motorway course is blowing it's usual Northerly (the best wind for this course) we will venture back in the New Year and do it justice.

One good thing about doing a course like we did today is to look at the best and fastest lines on different stretches. If you know what the tide is doing around various stretches of the course and how the river flow works and getting out of the main flow when heading up river you can save quite a bit of time...................also taking straight lines versus wide lines and shallows and deeper patches. People to watch when you are paddling are some of the cunning ones on Surf skis and Waka Ama, today Neil O'Brien and Craig Anderson out front choose good lines and made ground on others also Tunui they employed some cunning out there today and stuck to the shoreline on the way home. When you go out to Ngatitoa also watch the Porirua locals and see where they paddle opposed to those that don't know the area and tides. It doesn't matter whether you are at the front of rear of the feild, everyone can make up a little time and save some energy.

Hey today was the best turnout in the Womens O.C.1 we have had thanks to the 4 girls out there doing it and not to be forgotten all the girls in the O.C.6's as well. All credit to the Kokiri mixed crew today paddling with 5 in the boat, they put in a pretty fine effort out there, as Taranaki Whanui have also done in the past. It is always good to have extra supporters come along to each race they can also serve as a great draft pick for some of the short crews on the day.

Honourable mentions to today to Sharlene, having some extra time up her sleeve she was able to take some really good photos. If you would like any photos just simply clip them off the link given and save them on you computers or send via e-mail to others. Big ups to Sharlenes able assistant Taylor (Taggart) who was the complete cheer leading package, holder of car keys, and yep if you won a spot prize thank Taylor she drew your number out!

Race 5

The next race is November 16 and is from Hataitai Beach, Evans Bay. The distance will be about 9 km again and with Evans Bay always reliable for a good Northerly we will more than likely have a two loop course similar to the first race of the Series, Up to Balaena Bay and down to the bottom of Evans Bay.
