Welly Paddlers - Welcome to Summer

Welly Paddlers are now adding "The Matiu Island Event" as another of our cornerstone Events that we Organise Annually

Our Matiu Island Event has actually been running since 2003.... so that's 16 years where it has mostly stayed under the radar.

This year we'd like to highlight the "Matiu Island Event" as our Welly Paddlers  "Welcome to Summer" Event.

Like many of our Events we aim to make them inclusive across all the paddle sports and to achieve this we have 3 courses......one of which is a shoreline course that is aimed to include multisport kayaks, stand up paddle boarders and novice paddlers.
Our open water courses out around the Island are open to those who are fully capable of self rescuing themselves....this is achieved by remounting or rolling (having the ability to roll perfectly everytime if you are a kayaker.)

The logic is that you need to do this paddling recreationally and training....therefore in an event to us, there is no difference in the practice. It's a matter of personal responsibility from the paddlers side and from our side a duty of care in regards to the safe and practical Management of the course and the conditions to be encountered on the day.

We do have a tail end person tracking back through the field and we operate VHF marine radios on chanel 77, for any paddler to shore assistance that may be required. Sharlene has one radio and Chester has the other.
Some paddlers also have their own radios when paddling with us.

If the weather is set to cut up badly on the day we reserve the right to run the Eastside course or head to Sladden Park and run a course of 2 and 3 laps up to the Ava Street railbridge bridge and down to the dredging bay at the river mouth.
