Briefing notes for The Motorway Classic 2023

• As soon as you arrive at the Event go and check in at Registration
• The GWRC Harbour bylaws apply to everyone entering
• The wearing of PFD’s saves lives
• Welly Paddlers display Event rules at our Events, they are based on respect and fair play.
ALL PADDLERS MUST READ ALL THE EVENT DETAIL ON – www.wellypaddlers.blogspot.com
• High Tide is at 9.39 am
• The Metservice weather forecast is in km/h – refer to photo.
• Please be aware of all craft out on the water this includes any rowing craft and any jet skis / motorboats *** this includes being prepared to take evasive action to avoid any collisions with other paddlers and all craft ***
• Please stay close to the start line 3 minutes prior to your start time
• Give each other plenty of sideways space at the start and particularly for the first 200 metres. Starting on the 2nd, 3rd or 4th row of the start grid is advantage as you get to ride on someone’s wash !
• If you withdraw for any reason please let Sharlene or Chester know immediately so we can account for all paddlers out on the water.
• Rhys is our boat guy and will be following the last paddlers through to the finish. Chester is on a surf ski looking after the short course will also be based around our buoy near the BP Station for the long course
• Sharlene is on a loud hailer calling the start groups up. Each group will get a 2 minute - 1 minute - 30 seconds start warning - then 3, 2, 1…. AIR HORN IS GO !
• LONG COURSE : All craft need to turn inside the short course buoy near the BP Station – on the way out and also on the way back !
• We operate the Event on Marine Radio channel 77. The Event Safety number is 0274 581 005 (Sharlene)
• Please be considerate at the Event location as it is a shared Public Space. We will need to be patient and respectful around the General Public and the same applies to the General Public being patient with us. Honiana Te Puni Reserve is a really busy place
• Once all paddlers are off the water secure craft, get changed as the Spot prize giving will get under way and conclude fairly smartly - see times below
